Navtej Kohli Biography
I am Navtej Kohli, a doctor. I was born in Punjab, India, but I grew up in New Delhi and I completed my graduation in New Delhi.
I had plans to start my residency in India after medical school, but in those days, to get a position anywhere you needed to have contacts which were something alien to me as I came from a very humble background having spent the earlier part of my childhood in the golden fields of Punjab. The fact that your knowledge and qualifications account for nothing upset me to a great extent. I thought of changing my choice of profession until a few of my friends who had gone to the U.S. motivated me to look into coming there. I came to the U.S. in 1992 to do my internal medicine residency in Syracuse. And things started to look good after a very long time.
During the course of my training, there were about 30 to 35 residents and almost half were foreign medical graduates (FMGs). The previous year, 100% of the residents were foreign medical graduates. It was great fun working with all of them.
When I started looking for work, there really weren't many choices and I had to work in an under-served area to change my J-1 visa to a work visa. Fortunately, I got an opening in New York. My wife, also named Kohli Navtej, (another joke life played on me!!) is a dentist. That brings up two Dr. Navtej Kohli's and not to forget the confusion! But I can’t complain as she has been my pillar of strength and a great support throughout my life.
